It is with much happiness (because it happened) and sadness again (because I wasn’t there for the second year in a row) that I announce that the Hastings Traditional Jack-in-the-Green was (reasonably) safely released from the Fisherman’s Museum on Rock-a-Nore Road. He was attended as always by his honour guard of Twelve Bogies who this year I have been informed smelt of  a combination of butterflies, Jack Daniels and hope. Jack led the procession and was followed  by Black Sal, Mad Jack’s Morris, The Sweeps, The May Queen, Hannah’s Cat, The Lovely Ladies, The Gay Bogies, The Hastings Giant (and other Giants), Sambalanco and many, many other followers (mostly in green).

I am indebted to (and jealous of)  Ian McLauchlan for his fantastic pictures of this years Hastings Jack. More to follow on our Flickr archive soon.

Confirmed Jack sightings so far:

  • Winchcombe – May Dawn
  • Rochester (Blue Bell Hill) – May Dawn
  • Whitstable (Dead Horse Morris) – May Dawn
  • Deptford (Fowlers Troop) – May Day
  • Bristol
  • Knutsford
  • Whitstable (Oyster Morris)
  • Hastings

I would be indebted to anyone who could confirm if any of the following went out this year and doubly indebted if they could send me a picture or two:

  • Guildford
  • Highworth
  • Ilfracombe
  • Oxford
  • Tunbridge Wells
  • City of London Jack

Sadly fog and rain in Cornwall meant that Boekka’s Lands End Jack-in the-Green couldn’t see in the dawn this year. There have been no sightings of the High Wycombe Jack since 2012.

Still to come:

  • Brentham Jack-in-the-Green -Saturday May 10th
  • Yaxley Jack-in-the-Green – Saturday May 17th
