Welcome to the merry month. Herein is a selection of May morning music that I put together for my U3A group ‘Music sans Frontieres.

I love it. Summer is a’coming in , the birds wake us in the morning and we have a continuous succession of flowers in the garden and in the lanes. In the words of this song by Bellowhead ‘The finest month in all the year is the very merry month of May’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLj1VvsrKZE

The ‘Obby Osses will be out in Padstow today. I went there some years back but too much publicity makes for too many people so it wasn’t much fun as I could see very little of the action. Their song was very memorable though. Steelye Span produced a good version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9KvspjpKN8

The Minehead Obby Osses start at 6am on May morning, and performances continue through the week. The music is boring but the frolics are much more accessible When my daughter Ceri was about fifteen she (presumed a virgin) got captured and presented to the Obby Oss in the middle of the Main A39 road, much to the consternation of passing, but delayed, motorists. She was supposed to have got pregnant as a result, but thankfully a few more years passed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDOkBPWjugU

May Day never was just about maypoles, Obby Osses, Green men and floral dances. Jonathan Coulton puts things very explicitly in his song ‘First of May’. I am not giving you a link for that; if you are curious enough you will search it out, but be warned….use headphones if there are children in the house.

The forecasters tell us it is going to be colder over the weekend so that should dampen things down a bit !! No matter, Summer is a’coming in, loudly sing cuckoo…except I haven’t one for a few years now. Angus
