All things Green Man & the traditional Jack-in-the-Green

Sightings

COTGM Member Jerry Bird has sent some pictures of Green Men at St Laurence’s Church, Upwey Village Dorset for our Flickr site. He has also added to the  information that was detailed in Clive Hicks Gazetteer in his book “The Green Man.”
On the carved stone capitals Jerry located one green man with foliage sprouting from the mouth and two faces in similar positions with surrounding foliage.
But the most fascinating thing  has to be  six more capitals where the carvings appear to have been sawn off!  The pillars date from late 13th/early 14th century, according to the guide book. The question is were these all Green Men or similar foliate figures? If so why were these ones removed and the other ones left intact? and of course when and by whom were they removed?
If anyone can shed any light on this mystery please contact us via the COTGM website at www.thecompanyofthegreenman.co.uk
